CPIA Partners Prep for Spring with New Product Launches

Spring has sprung, and so has the number of new products being released by paint and coatings manufacturers. As the commercial painting season ramps up and the weather gets warmer, these new offerings provide new color, design and safety options for coating projects. Several of our CPIA Industry Partners have revealed products to help you tackle your next paint project needs.

Benjamin Moore

Benjamin Moore recently introduced a new line of all-weather exterior stains and prep products. According to the emailed press release, the Woodluxe line is designed for use on exterior siding, decks, porches, fences and furniture. The proprietary formula reportedly seals and protects wood from cracking and peeling, while offering fade resistance.

Benjamin Moore says that Woodluxe enables easy, flexible application that can be done in heat, sun and humidity. It also results in a consistent finish that provides a UV and mildew resistant coating.

“Fueled by innovative technology, Woodluxe sets every staining project up for success and extends the beauty of interior design to outdoor spaces,” said Brad Henderson, Director, Product Management at Benjamin Moore. “Years of research and rigorous testing enable us to continuously innovate and deliver the highest-quality coatings that painting contractors, designers and consumers expect and love.”

Woodluxe is available in water- and oil-based formulas in varying opacities, with curated colors available in translucent, semi-transparent and semi-solid opacities. Solid opacities can be tinted in over 3,500 Benjamin Moore colors. Woodluxe is available exclusively at locally owned retailers throughout the United States and Canada.

PPG

At the beginning of the month, PPG introduced the new Speedhide Max paint, expanding its Speedhide professional paint line. According to PPG, the zero volatile organic compound product holds certification from the Master Painters Institute. The professional grade interior paint also reportedly features durability, ease of stain removal, excellent hide and more.

“At PPG, we pride ourselves on being the coatings partner that pro painters trust for quality results,” said Eric Stevenson, Director of Product Management, Marketing and Pricing, Architectural Coatings, U.S. and Canada. “We partner with pros by listening to and meeting their needs, while tapping into the more than 135 years of experience we have providing coatings products and solutions. We are excited to add Speedhide Max paint to a family of paint products pros already know and love.”

The Speedhide Max paint is available at PPG Paints stores and the PPG Paints app in three sheens, including eggshell, satin and lo lustre. PPG explains that it is competitively priced for “strong performance at a cost-effective price.” Additionally, the company is expanding its existing Speedhide zero VOC offering to include three new sheen options: ultra flat, sheen eggshell and lo lustre.

This expansion brings the number of sheen offerings to seven, reportedly making it the most extensive range of sheens in the U.S. for a product of its kind. PPG adds that the Speedhide zero VOC label will also have a new look this spring.

Sherwin-Williams

The Coil Coatings division of global coatings firm The Sherwin-Williams Company recently released a collection of printed metal coatings colorways derived from nature to enhance the look of natural building materials.

“Our experts at the Sherwin-Williams DesignHouse studied design trends, nature and countless products across markets,” said Kiki Redhead, Global Color Materials Finish (CMF) & Trend Manager at Sherwin-Williams. “While observing the evolution of wood, natural metal and stone, we realized an opportunity to create something that would simultaneously stand out and fit in.”

Emulate / Sherwin-Williams

Dubbed Emulate, the coatings offer a “fresh take on the new natural” by mimicking the design, pattern and structure of common building materials. The latest release reportedly includes 30 total colorways across:

- Wood – “bringing nature to life,” inspired from oak, walnut, burl and barnboard;

- Stone – “a vision of strength,” chiseled in marble, travertine, concrete and terrazzo; and

- Metal – “modern durability,” leaf, weathered, burnished and hammered.

These coatings utilize a rotogravure printing process and are applied with an impression roller for the desired look of nature to the metal substrate. Sherwin explains that not only are they intended to add detail to a project, but also aim to preserve the environment with recyclable metal substrates. According to the company’s emailed release, the Coil Coatings team translated the technologies, colors and effects of Emulate based on market research and major societal catalysts such as sustainability, economy, humanity and equality.

Also this month, Sherwin-Williams Protective and Marine has recently released new thin-film intumescent fire protection coating, ideal for on-site application to protect structural steel substrates. According to the press release, Firetex FX7002 is designed to meet the highest performance standards and aesthetic demands of the commercial construction industry.

Firetex reportedly has the broadest range of beam listings on the market for up to a two-hour fire-resistance rating and approved listings for a solvent-based acrylic that are among the industry’s lowest coating thicknesses at that duration for steel beams. The company notes that those low thicknesses, combined with the coating’s broad application parameters and high film build capabilities, allow contractors to complete their projects quicker with enhanced “peace of mind” in the material’s ability to protect steel with proven testing results.

The comprehensive listings reportedly enable the protection of a wider range of steel sizes for both restrained and unrestrained assemblies without the need for extrapolation. Firetex FX7002 is also undergoing column and hollow steel section (HSS) testing that is intended to match that extended scope for steel columns.

Firetex FX7002 reportedly has high wet film build properties that can reduce the number of coats required. Applicators can build the coating to up to 56 mils wet film thickness (WFT), or 40 mils dry film thickness (DFT), per coat. This higher film build compared to other solvent-based intumescent coatings, combined with lower required DFTs, means applicators can achieve the required protection sooner for most steel with two-hour fire rating requirements, Sherwin says.

“The extensive certified listing of approved restrained and unrestrained beams for Firetex FX7002 is enhanced by the coating’s low thickness requirements,” said Casey Herston, North America Fire Protection Product Manager for Sherwin-Williams Protective and Marine. “In addition, the low coating thicknesses and higher per-coat film build mean fewer coats need to be applied, saving significant material and labor costs on projects, while also accelerating construction schedules. This means applicators can move to the next project faster, and general contractors can get the subsequent trades on and off projects quicker.”

Sherwin explains that the coating offers a broader application window for field applications compared to most commercially available water-based acrylic intumescent products. With its lower temperature application limit, applicators can spray the single-component coating in temperatures that are cooler than what is typical with water-based formulations.

Because of this, it allows more on-site fireproofing coating days for applicators. Additionally, the high volume solids product has outstanding application characteristics and a low volatile organic compound (VOC) content. Firetex FX7002 is UL 263-listed and meets the requirements of ANSI/UL 263 and CAN/ULC-S101 for Interior Conditioned Spaces (ICSs), Interior General Purpose use in Design Nos. N627 and Y606. Additional column testing is underway to extensively extend this scope.

Sherwin recommends the coating for use in ICSs without the need for a topcoat, as well as Interior General Spaces with an approved topcoat. The company adds that it can be used on structural steel for a wide array of buildings, including commercial structures, warehouses, manufacturing plants, hospitals and healthcare facilities, and more.
